Hydrangea arborescens (smooth) 'Annabelle' Rounded, compact, deciduous shrub with long-staked, broadly ovate 7" leaves that are dark green above and paler beneath. Large, spherical 12"corymbs of crowded, dull white, mainly sterile flowers are borne in summer. Matures at 3' high by 5' wide. Requires shaded area in afternoon heat. Deer Resistant Prune Annabelle hydrangea lightly to remove faded flowers after they've bloomed; in early autumn. PRUNING YOUR ARBORESCENS HYDRANGEA: Both panicled hydrangea and smooth hydrangea, including ‘Annabelle’ and ‘Samantha,’ flower on new wood or current season’s growth, so they can be severely pruned after fall frost and still flower the following summer. In fact, some growers cut their ‘Annabelles’ to the ground each winter in order to have flower heads on three to four foot straight stems the next summer.Read more at: https://macon.ces.ncsu.edu/2017/04/pruning-hydrangeas/ Photos courtesy of Toms Creek Nursery in Denton, NC & our friends at Lake
