Owls are majestic and magical creatures. However, in many cultures they have traditionally been associated with a darker, more sinister side and were thought to symbolize bad omens and death.  Thankfully, that malevolent perception changed during the 19th century when owls began to make their way into children's nursery rhymes. Soon, these beautiful birds were everywhere -- adorning lamps and andirons, decorating library buildings and, of course, popping up in jewelry motifs. They were especially popular during the Arts and Crafts movement. Many Victorians wore owls as a symbol of wisdom and luck as well as to protect them from evil.  This charming case is fashioned in sterling silver with striking natural ruby eyes and was initially sold as a pencil, file or needle case to be worn on a chatelaine.
