She is considered a tragic hero because she sticks to her beliefs in the Gods and family, and dies because of her loyalty to them. The Athenian tragedy "Antigone" written by Sophocles in 441 BC was first performed at the Festival of Dionysus of the same year. It is thought to be the second oldest surviving play of Sophocles. Antigone as a character has come to be synonymous to standing up for what you believe in, and is seen as a case study for equity.
