
Photographer Asa Haines Self Portrait Taken with Cigar Box Camera - Rare
Rare original, 6th plate ambrotype showing a man smoking a pipe. Affixed to the back is a piece of paper with the following handwritten note in pencil:Taken in Cigar Box Cameraby myself and of myselfAHAlthough we only have the initials, this was purchased out of a Philadelphia estate, and research shows that in 1854, Asa Haines advertised as a "photographist" at 159 Chestnut Street there. In later directories he was only listed as "Cigars". I think it's very likely "AH" = Asa Haines, but of course I can't guarantee it.Ambrotype is uncased as found. Very good antique condition.My photos show how it appears under my desktop lamp, taken with my cell phone and uploaded straight to this listing with NO editing.. it should appear this way or better when viewed in hand, in daylight and/or proper lighting.
