Claude Monet painted this stunning landscape while vacationing at the village of Bordighera on the Italian Riviera in 1884. It is actually a much larger version of a piece that Monet had already completed and was a gift for his friend, the artist Berthe Morisot as a mural to adorn her drawing room in Paris. Bordighera is on the Northwest coast of Italy, and is a beautiful resort renowned for its gardens and palm trees. It became something of an artist haven in the 1800s, with many of the impressionists choosing to winter there, along with many upper-class English and German tourists. Monet and Auguste Renoir visited in 1883 in their search for new, paintable landscapes and Monet returned alone the following year, and painted more than forty views of the area, the town and its gardens. The painting capt
