Heavy Cruiser Prinz Eugen Artifacts with GI Provenance-This is a grouping of artifact removed from the Prinz Eugen while it was in the hands of the USN. Samuel “Sonny” Gitlin was from New York and enlisted in the navy in December of 1944 at the age of 17. By the time he finished all of his training, the war was of course over. He was a highly skilled electronics technician by February of 1946 and by his account was quite anxious to get aboard a ship. His wish came true in March of 1946 when he boarded his first ship in Philadelphia. It just so happened to be the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen which had been taken as a war trophy and been designated the IX 300. The artifacts that he removed include a small (but heavy) motor from the turret gun control room, an optic piece (also very heavy) from a fire control instrument, a
