German WWII Presentation Cigarette Case-This silver case measures approx.3 ½ inches square. It stands 2 ¼ inches tall on small legs. It is approx. 1 ¼ inches deep. Just enough to hold quite a few cigarettes. The interesting thing about this decorative box is the dedication on the top. This is presented to the Standarte 5th Gruppe of Ostland for years of service from 1936 through 1938. This was presented to this Gruppe from SA Stabschef Victor Lutze.  Victor Lutze played a very important role on the Rohm purge, or night of the long knives. After the purge of July 1934, Lutze succeeded Ernst Rohm as Stabschef and Reichsleiter of the SA. He also became an associate of Franz Pfeffer von Salomon, who was the first leader of the SA. Together, they determined the structure of the Sturmabteilung. Lutze died after he was injured in a car accident in 1943.  It is worth doing a google search to see what his involvement was in July of 1934. Very interesting. Ok, let’s get back to the case.
