German WWII Postcard of Knight’s Cross Recipient Hauptmann Werner Baumbach
German WWII Postcard of Knight’s Cross Recipient Hauptmann Werner Baumbach- This is a colored sketch of the Luftwaffe pilot Werner Baumbach. He commanded the secret bomber wing Kampfgeschwader 200 (KG 200) of the Luftwaffe. Baumbach received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords for the destruction of over 300,000 gross register tons of Allied shipping. He survived the war but died in a plane crash in Argentina on October 20th 1953 near Berazategui, while evaluating a British Lancaster bomber for the Argentine Air Force. The sketch is by artist Wolfgang Willrich, and was part of the “Heroes of the Fatherland” series. The colors are bright and this is very clean. There is a corner fold, so please be sure to look closely at the photos. The reverse of the postcard is setup in the traditional style with room for a note and the address, with the studio information separating the two halves. This would look great in a small frame.
