American President - Manila

Manila is the capital of the Philippines, also known as the Pearl of the Orient. It is a heavily populated city located on the island of Southern Luzon. This poster features vibrant colors of yellow and orange, accentuating Manila’s tropical climate. In this image we see a stylized view of Manila Bay with an American President steamship coming to port. On the right, we see a colorful rendition of the San Agustin Church. This poster is one of a series commissioned by American President Lines to promote travel by way of ship using their 50 port locations. The American President Lines was created in 1938, just prior to World War II, as a result of the renaming of the Dollar Steamship Lines which emerged from bankruptcy as APL. By 1940 the American Government commissioned 16 new ships, all to be named after American Presidents.
