Presented is an original 1865 "Johnson's Georgetown and The City of Washington, The Capital of the United States of America” map. This map was issued as page 37 in the 1865 edition of “Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas.” The map is engraved, with attractive hand coloring and a decorative strapwork border. The City of Washington is outlined in pink, colored and numbered by wards. Georgetown is outlined separately in pink, not part of a ward. Labeled but not colored are Georgetown Heights, Analostan or Mason's Island, Alexander's Island, and Uniontown. The map is beautifully detailed, with railroads, roads, rivers and creeks, and important buildings all marked. The map labels the Potomac River, Eastern Branch River, the Washington & Alexandria Railroad, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, Tiber Creek, Washington Canal, James Creek, and Spring Branch. The map has three inset vignette images of "Smithsonian Institution," "The Capitol," and "Washington Monument.” This 1865
