Rangoon, Burma was an important furniture making center during the peak of the British Raj in the late 19th and early 20th century. The chief reason was the availability of Burmese teak with its strength, resistance to insects and moisture, and attractive grain. Colonial pieces were similar to native British furniture but tended to be simpler and sturdier. Many are still in use today, with some trickling out of Burma each year. This table dates to the 1890’s and was recently ebonized.
