John Lutz via Zoom   Dostoevsky’s underground man is one of the most memorable and compelling characters in nineteenth-century fiction. In conflict with society as much as he is at war with himself, the underground man prefigures the alienated and often revolutionary figures found in modern and contemporary fiction. Using Notes from Underground as a point of departure, we will explore some twentieth- and twenty-first century works of literature that make use of conflicted anti-social narrators in ways directly indebted to Dostoevsky’s work.
