The Curious Cubs
Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. These are the youngest generation of Marsh Lions - just a few months old waiting patiently for the return of their mothers near a shallow pool of water. The lionesses - Cloudy Eye and Kabibi had gone off to search for food leaving the cubs to tuck themselves away among the long grass and fallen trees around the area we call Lake Nakuru, and ancient ox-bow of the Mara River at the heart of Musiara Marsh, the dry season territory of the Marsh Pride. The smallest of the cubs - the little female on the left of the photograph - is Cloudy Eyes' only cub. One can only say, in “human speak,” that they adored one another!
