The map depicts California as an island, and also features an inset of Antarctica, 'Terra Australis Incognita,' mapped before discovery based on early assumptions of a balancing landmass in the southern hemisphere. Jan Jansson was born in Arnhem in 1588, he was the son of Jan Janszoon the Elder, a publisher and bookseller. In 1612, he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of prominent cartographer Jodocus Hondius. In 1616, he produced his first maps of France and Italy, and by 1623 Jansson owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main. He would later expand his enterprise, selling books in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin
