Frémont, the first Republican presidential candidate. When Lincoln secured the Republican nomination in 1860, the plate was modified. Frémont's likeness was burnished out and replaced with Lincoln's, while the globe was transformed into a reading lamp. Lincoln appeared clean-shaven in the second iteration of the engraving and shortly thereafter, the present example emerged with the addition of Lincoln's iconic beard. Interestingly, a faint shadow can be observed around both Lincoln's head and the lamp, remnants of the plate's earlier use for Frémont's portrait.
