Ultrafiltration retains minerals in the water, while filtering out bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The UF membrane is very effective in reducing: - rust- sediment- tanin- chlorine taste and odor- benzene- crypto- heavy metals- bacteria; reduces algae, chloride, copper, lead, mercury; whereas it has no effect on chemicals and TDS.If you have a high amount of particulate matter, a Reverse Osmosis membrane is suggested.  Do I Need Reverse Osmosis? (RO) RO is a water purification technology that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove larger particles & an array of contaminants.The main difference between Reverse Osmosis and the ultrafiltration membrane is pore size. UF pore size ranges from 0.01 to 0.1 microns, whereas the reverse osmosis membrane has a more fine pore size of 0.0001 microns. Thus the RO membrane could remove impurities that are much finer, such as TDS.When water goes through the RO Membrane, leftover water hardness & contaminants that are too big to go through the UF & RO membrane will wash out through your drain line. (In the back of the water cooler, the system will connect to your kitchen drain for the wastewater.)
