I used to be afraid of snakes, even though I rarely saw one. Then, during a difficult season, I lived next to someone who would lash out at me in ugly ways. I didn’t understand why, and I don’t think he did either. I’ll admit that I cried, feeling so alone and unprotected. Then, I began seeing a snake on every single walk I took. There she would be, sitting under a tree I was walking past, crossing the road before me, or hanging harmlessly from the branches. Over time, I grew to know her.
