Very unusual to find all three of the first years of The National Preacher bound as one. They published the best of the American, evangelical pulpit from across denominational lines, focusing on missionary, experimental, revivalist, and political discourse.  The present copy belonged to Rev. Samuel Hopkins Emery [1815-1901]. Emery was minister at Taunton and Providence before moving Westward ward during the Westward Expansion and serving in Chicago. In 1862, Emery noticed a significant gap in the Civil War Chaplaincy, i.e. at the hospitals where soldiers might need spiritual care most urgently. He scheduled and obtained a meeting with President Abraham Lincoln. The result of the meeting was the formation of the Army Hospital Chaplaincy Corp, to which he was the first appointed Chaplain . . . and that by Lincoln himself.  Sermons included here by many important Second Great Awakening divines, i.e. Edwin Dorr Griffin, William Buell Sprague, Gardiner Spring, etc. Both Iain Murray and Dr.
