Brassica oleracea HEIRLOOM. This variety came to the United States in the late 1800s with Italian immigrants, and has been a favorite among gardeners ever since! Uniform plants produce a 3 to 8 inch wide central head, then abundant side shoots after the main head is harvested. Good for spring planting, but even better for a fall crop, since it handles dropping temperatures especially well, and will continue producing side shoots until a hard frost arrives. Green Sprouting Calabrese broccoli can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost and transplanted to the garden 2 weeks before last frost, or started in late summer for fall harvest. Plants will need full sun, and well-drained soil amended with plenty of compost. Main heads are ready to harvest about 60 days after transplanting.
