Despite being one of the most frequently misspelled spices, cardamom occupies a unique spot in the spice world.  It is frequently used in Indian cooking, as well as in a number of Middle Eastern and Asian dishes.  Cardamom is also used to flavor the famous the Scandinavian Jule bread Julekake, and sweet buns and breads.  It’s one of the most expensive spices, but only a small amount is needed to impart flavor.  If you have a recipe that calls for whole cardamom, 10 pods equals ​about 1 1⁄2 teaspoons of ground cardamom.
