Mackinac Island Historic Lighthouse Mackinaw Point is the convergence of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron and is the site of the Mackinac Point Lighthouse. Constructed in 1889, it operated from 1890-1957. Built of Cream City brick & trimmed w/ Indiana limestone, the double-walled cylindrical tower rose 45 ft & was capped w/ a prefab octagonal iron lantern housing a 4th-order Fresnel lens, visible for up to 14nm/26km. In 2000, restoration was funded to make it look like 1910. The public can access the 1st floor & do activities like lighting a miniature Fresnel lens & wearing lighthouse keeper clothing. Starting in 2018, the lighthouse underwent major exterior & interior restorations. As it is next to the Mackinac Bridge, visitors can get good views of the bridge & boat traffic.
