This prayer kneeler features elegant carving on the side panels, an open front, and a sloped top surface for a prayer book. Storage is provided beneath the sloped top behind a small drop-down door. Prayer kneelers or prayer benches were traditionally called prie-dieu meaning "pray (to) God" in French as early as the 17th century. They were used in churches by the bride and groom during wedding ceremonies, by clerics during prayers, and by priests reciting Kneeling Prayers. In private, they were used during individual devotions. Condition: Good. Marking on side panels where name plates were removed.
