Whitening creams have historically used hydroquinone and kojic acid, which are cytotoxic. Other whitening creams alternately use botanical extracts of Mulberry or Licorice Root which contains unstable tyrosinase inhibiting flavonoids, which causes tyrosine to hyper-pigment (oxidize and darken skin).
