While its exact origins are unclear, it gained widespread recognition in the modern quilting community around the early 2010s when Japanese quilter Setsuko Inagawa featured it in a quilt displayed at an international quilt show. Her interpretation of the block showcased bold colors and scrappy piecing, inspiring quilters worldwide. Since then, the block has been adapted into numerous styles, often using high-contrast fabrics to emphasize its distinct X and plus shapes.
