The formation of sardonyx involves a process where layers of chalcedony quartz are deposited within cavities or fractures in rocks, often in association with other minerals. The alternating bands of color are created by different impurities present in the silica-rich solutions during the crystallization process. Iron oxide impurities give the red to brownish-red hues (sard), while manganese oxide impurities create the white to black bands (onyx).
