Carthage, Texas, was founded in 1847. If you are on the road from Nacadoches to Shreveport, La., you are going to go through his piney woods town. During the Great Depression, a gas field was discovered near Carthage, and it is now known as the Gas Capital of the United States.  The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame is located in Carthage. And although Carthage boasts of several baseball and football legends, its the women of Carthage are stellar! Mildred Fay Jefferson was the first black American woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School; as well as the former president and founding member of the National Right to Life Committee.
