This long, wide katana is signed by Fujiwara Iehide, certified by the NBTHK as Tokubetsu Hozon (especially worth of preservation) of the Takada school of Bungo Province (modern day Oita Prefecture), who was active between 1504-1521. The Takada school began in Takada village in the Nanbokucho period when its founder Tomoyuki brought smithing techniques from Bizen Province. While Takada swords are generally shunned by collectors as being plain, samurai of the time preferred them for their durability. In hand, this sword is robust and intimidating.
