About the Painting The Arrival of Spring and Summer (Russian: Приход весны и лета) is a 1914 Cubo-Futurist painting by David Burliuk (Russian: Давид Давидович Бурлюк). Burliuk's iconoclastic gesture strikes at once at both the sentimental imagery of the classical pastoral and the highbrow seriousness of Russian abstraction with its black Suprematist squares, circles and crosses. Endowing triangles with kitsch anthropomorphic features, Burliuk ironically destroys the very irreconcilable opposition of non-objectiveness and figurativeness. He creates his own version of seasonal allegories (spring, summer, winter, autumn). Instead of the captivating naked bodies of beautiful girls inhabiting European painting and sculpture of the Renaissance and New Time, the viewer sees two triangles walking along the field: one of them is Spring, the other is Summer.
