His farm, among the others in the area, is very remote. It’s located in Yanatile, in the middle of the Cusco Andes, which is about 4 hours from the city of Cusco in Southern Peru. The valleys there are lush, and perfect for growing coffee, but transporting the coffee is an arduous process. Most notably, many farmers don’t live on their farms, so they must walk several hours between the farms and their houses. When it comes to harvest time, this means they must haul the harvested cherry on hours-long trips back home to be washed, fermented, and dried. In addition, most farms don’t have road access, so it takes more hours of walking to reach most farms. After drying, the coffee must be transported in parchment to the nearest road for pickup.
