The Evergreen | Victorian Gift Book | 1848 | Fine Binding

These finely bound Victorian collections of stories, poetry, and illustrations were hugely popular from the 1840s-1860s and are therefore known affectionately as “gift books.” This is an early one, dated 1848 and bound in full black leather with gilt decorations on all sides and gilded fore edges. I have several of these in my collection- they are one of my favorite kinds of antique books to collect. Some wear to the leather covers and insect damage that affects only the back flyleaves. Some foxing throughout. All black and white engravings are present and textblock is clean and tight.
