This University of Minnesota variety was introduced in 1977 and is a cross between the Northern Spy and MN 447 (Frostbite) Apples. Commercially viable and popular in the upper Midwest for its cold hardiness and consistent cropping. The Sweet 16 apple is dark red and bares heavily in mid-late September. It is great for eating, baking and storing. It is exceptionally cold hardy. The apple is sweet, crispy and has mild cherry undertones. It has an exceptionally high sugar content. A visually appealing apple, the skin is yellow to orange and as if someone dripped red paint across its surface resulting in a variegated skin.  USDA Zone: 3-9 Mature Heights:  Bud-10: ~10-12' tall; Dwarf EMLA 7: ~15-17' tall; Semi-Dwarf Sun: Full Sun Bloom Group: 3, Mid Season Ripening Time: Late September Pollination: Required Bud-10 Rootstock Characteristics EMLA 7 Rootstock Characteristics As of July 20, 2025, we have ceased shipping bare root trees for the Spring 2025 Season.
