B Neresheimer & Sohne 800/900 Silver Antique Trinket Box - Courtship Gathering Scene
Nothing poses a problem like trying to identify German-made Hanau Silver. In offering this oval shaped, lidded trinket box, the silver content would be either 800 or 900. In looking on the Internet, I can ascertain that the marks are attributed to the firm of B Neresheimer & Sohne - a firm that exhibited their silver wares at the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair which would be right as this piece is from St Louis, Missouri. Dating anywhere from 1893 to 1903, the box I offer now bears a very fine repousse design - a pastoral scene featuring a pair of lovers sitting beneath a tree with a fellowship of friends? minstrels? also within the design. The company was well known for its copying of Old Masters works in silver - perhaps this is such a piece? Size is about 4" long x 2-3/4" wide; height is 1" and a bit. Weight is about 140 grams. Very nice condition with no dents or dings but a good polish is needed on the inside (a lot in this area) and out. Terrific design, very nicely made. Lid open
