It was their first record to receive major label backing, via Elektra. It likewise doubled as an introduction to slippery-fingered bassist Scott Reeder and a farewell to mastodonic drum rumbler Brant Bjork. As for the escalation of their overall sound, future Queens of the Stone Age leader Josh Homme was thriving in a maximalist mix of wah-wah-crushing guitar riffs (“Gardenia”) and acid-dappled campfire jams (“Space Cadet”), proving that he and the rest of Kyuss were eagerly traversing every inch of their sprawling Sky Valley.
