Self-Portrait with Straw Hat

Van Gogh didn't paint the background of his autoportrait. The artist only slightly indicates its color with scattered strokes. He used the paper tone as the leading skin tone, outlining the shaded parts with lilac and somewhat dazzling. But the facial features – eyes, lips, beard, and mustache – are written with much more care. Vincent Van Gogh emphasized the essential, minimizing minor details.
