Wanderer above the Sea of Fog

A solitary man, elegantly dressed and unprepared for the mountain, turns his back on the viewer. He contemplates an imaginary and tragic landscape that extends to infinity, between rocks and clouds. Friedrich puts man face to face with his destiny. Does the traveler in the fog represent a reflection on oneself? Is the traveler a metaphor for the unknown future? No matter the interpretations, this is a sublime painting.
