This is a rare 1937 model 70 carbine (20" barrel) chambered in .30-06 (.30 Gov't '06).  Winchester only made 7,197 carbines total in all years of production and only produced 9,335 rifles (in all chamberings) in 1937, making this a rare combination of year and chambering. This rifle has a number of features found only on the very earliest rifles: The floor plate is marked with a triangle-dash proof mark on the underside The barrel is equipped with a Lyman 31W Gold Bead front sight The bolt stop release plunger is jumbo size – correct for the very earliest rifles, only found under serial number 10,000. There is no retaining pin on the safety lever. In addition, this classic rifle has a Carl Zeiss Zeilklein scope mounted in an early and unusual Redfield mount (Tilden rings?). The scope has a German #5 reticle. The original bluing has some wear and scratches, but no notable metal damage. We rate the bluing at about 85%. The bolt is serial number matched to the receiver (serial number 69
