The Spirit of America is Howard Chandler Christy's most beautiful design for the Red Cross, and was created just after the war when the relief organization was overwhelmed by returning soldiers. "Christy Girls" are still known world-wide for their almost mysterious sensuality and emotive expressions. Their dreamy expressions enticed numerous young men to take up arms and enlist, and numerous Americans to empty their pockets to support the war effort.
