Succinylated concanavalin A (Succ-Con A) is isolated from jack bean seeds (Canavalia ensiformis) and is derived from native lectin concanavalin A (Con A). It has a molecular weight of 56,000 and an isoelectric point less than pH 4.4. It is a nonagglutinating lectin that has a carbohydrate specificity for ? linked mannose and glucose, with a sugar elution of ?-methlyglucoside + ?-methlymannoside. Both Con A and Succ-Con A have been studied for their effects to induce marked proliferation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Succ-Con A exhibits mitogenic action equal to native Con A and both increase lymphocytes levels of cyclic GMP. Succ-Con A differs from Con A in such that it fails to induce patch and cap formation, and at high concentrations does not exhibit diminished mitogenic action. Succ-Con A reversibly inhibits growth of normal cells and restores a normal growth phenotype to transformed cells. Studies suggest that the increase cell-to-cell adhesion in culture may influence c
