This specimen is a beautiful example of crystal structure! This is a large and sculptural cluster which features lovely crystals of metallic brown sphalerite, growing off of a sparkling calcite and quartz-rich matrix, accented by a tiny golden calcite crystal and a tiny cubic galena crystal. It is a specimen from the Elmwood Mine near Carthage, Tennessee. This famous mine is now closed. The Sphalerite displays rich brown color with translucent orange sections, and the sparkling matrix is a pale grey-white. The tiny golden calcite crystal is a bright yellow shade, and has excellent clarity and light reflection. The galena cube has a gunmetal shade and graphic shape. The terminations on all crystals are very sharp and clean! The unusual cluster is self-standing, and possesses several beautiful display angles. This is a high-quality large specimen with a unique and striking combination of minerals--it would offer a lot of beauty to any specimen collection! Locality: Elmwood Mine, near Carthage, Tennessee, USA. Dimensions: 5.50" x 3.50" x 3.00" (140mm x 90mm x 76mm) Weight: 824 g (1 lb 13.1 oz) The Elmwood Mine near Carthage, Tennessee, is a heavy metal mine that yields minerals such as sphalerite, galena, and fluorite. It has also been associated with a deep orange calcite. Sphalerite is a zinc sulfide mineral that nearly always contains iron. As iron content increases, submetallic luster also increases--color ranges from golden brown to gunmetal. Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral that forms in a multitude of growth habits. One of these is scalenohedral, or bipyramidal, crystals. Another habit is rhombohedral. Galena is a lead sulfide mineral which forms cubic shapes. Healing: Sphalerite is associated with strength, vitality, and grounding. Yellow calcite is for insight, clarity of perception, and willpower. Galena is associated with shamanic journeys and inner work. *Though many gems and minerals have historical and cultural associations with healing properties, these items are sold for display, study, and collector interest only.
