This is a stunning specimen from a well-known American locality! This cluster is rich brown Fluorite with lustrous faces, punctuated by delicate sharp blades of Celestite (or Celestine), a beautiful ice blue mineral which crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. It features unique and striking growth patterns—the dark brown fluorite cubes are well-formed, the flat tabular crystals are gemmy and ice blue (though many are broken or incomplete.) Fluorite and Celestite both may occur in a number of different color combinations, but this color combination is a signature of Clay Center, Ohio. The geode shape and combination of minerals are particularly distinctive. It is a cluster that is striking and beautiful, in both visible and ultraviolet light: Clay Center is known for its highly reactive ultraviolet reactions, and this is no exception. The cluster fluoresces a soft butter yellow with darker zones in the iridescent areas. This would make a wonderful display piece for any collection! Celestite is a strontium sulfate mineral, and is a main source for the element strontium. It forms crystals as well as occurring in massive and fibrous forms. It is quite soft at 3-3.5 on Moh's scale--it is also quite brittle, so care must be taken when displaying this mineral. Color may pale in prolonged sunlight.
