This is a beautiful bright green fibrous malachite cluster, punctuated by a deep red center of cuprite, a copper hydroxide mineral that is often known as "ruby copper". The malachite has grown in a sparkling, delicate fibrous structure, offering visual interest from all sides. When brightly lit, the deep red zone of cuprite in the center reflects amazing red clarity! This is a very rare, very attractive “Christmas” red and green combination. This medium sized, substantial cluster would make a handsome addition to any serious mineral collection! Locality: West Mashamba Mine, Congo. Dimensions: 2.25” x 1.88” x 2.38” (57mm x 48mm x 61mm) Weight: 154 g (5.4 oz) FORMATION: Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral, which is always green. It forms in association with other copper-bearing minerals. It is known for its amazingly graphic forms, which include fibrous (as delicate fibers) and botryoidal (globular clusters). It is a classic African mineral. Cuprite is a unique copper hydroxide mineral, that forms as a secondary mineral in copper deposits. With a brick red to dark red color and a submetallic luster, it is highly desirable. The color varies from solid gunmetal grey to transparent red, depending on the composition. It forms in the isometric system, so it may rarely form cubic and octahedral crystals. Though soft, faceted cuprite has a wonderful rich color and higher brilliance than diamond--crystals large enough to facet are extremely rare, and extremely desirable. HEALING: Malachite is associated with enlightened decision making, leadership, and creativity. Cuprite is associated with fertility, vitality, and stamina. It is also believed to enhance creativity and physical health. *Though many gems and minerals have historical and cultural associations with healing properties, these items are sold for display, study, and collector interest only.
