The Sutro Baths first opened in 1894. Visitors could enjoy slides, trapezes, springboards and a high dive. Over time, a number of other attractions were added, including natural history exhibits, sculpture galleries, paintings, artifacts from Mexico, China, Asia, and the Middle East, and even Egyptian mummies. Although the baths were beloved by generations of San Franciscans, they were not commercially successful. In 1964, after an unsuccessful run as an ice rink, the baths finally closed down.
