Description: Following in the footsteps of her fellow countrywoman, Maria Callas, Elena Souliotis was destined to face constant comparisons in the press. Listening to this recording now, it’s fascinating to discern both the points of similarity and the distinct qualities that Souliotis brings to her art. Her voice is even more beautiful than Callas’s, and the youthful vibrancy (she was in her twenties when this was recorded) lends her portrayal of Norma an unexpected ingénue charm. That said, her Norma is anything but fragile; Souliotis confidently colors her voice, particularly in the chest register, to heighten the dramatic effect rather than merely showcasing vocal beauty. Fiorenza Cossotto proves to be an excellent counterpart as Adalgisa, sounding closer to a soprano than a mezzo. Meanwhile, Gastone Limarilli’s voice, though powerful, occasionally comes off as a bit too thin, with his pitch sagging for much of the performance.
