Battle Of The Benches

While in Whitney, Texas, the most intriguing thing that I noticed were benches on Brazos St. that spanned half the block. Since 1922, old men would sit, chew tobacco, whittle, and gossip. In 1949, some ladies had requested to have the benches moved, so the Mayor had the Chief of Police move the benches to the alley.The "spit and whittlers" were outraged and called for a special election to have the benches rebuilt in their original location. However, the old men easily won the election 124 to 67.Would you be upset if your favorite hangout moved to this alley?
