This one part mold making compound is a renewable polymer from trees that are tapped in a similar way as for maple syrup or pine rosin. It comes mostly from the rubber tree (Hevea) in Asia. It has a very high tear strength, & is stretchy, tough, and water proof, having substantially greater tear strength than silicone rubber. As a mold making material it is water based, which makes it more user friendly than silicone or urethane which require harsh hydrocarbon solvents like acetone or paint thinner for cleanup. In 1770 Joseph Priestley noted that a piece of it was very good for rubbing off pencil marks from paper. So, there you have the origin for for the name "rubber"....(see more)
