This is a deflocculant that, like Sodium Silicate, allows the use of less water in a clay slip. That's advantageous because less water in the slip means less work the plaster mold has to do to remove enough water for the slip to become a leather hard clay. Unlike sodium silicate (which has been in use for centuries) it uses a polymer instead of an inorganic chemical to accomplish that. Probably the main reason that many potters prefer Darvan over sodium silicate is that Darvan is forgiving if too much is added.
