This is a water soluble wax/polymer. Since technically all waxes are also polymers, the manufacturer has covered both bases by naming it "Carbowax" and referring to it as a linear polymer in their literature. The "4000" refers to the molecular weight. The higher the MW, the more viscous it. Carbowax can be supplied as a liquid (low molecular weight) or solid (high molecular weight). The "4000" is a solid in granular/powder form. "PEG" refers to the chemical name for this polymer/wax, namely, polyethylene glycol. Like a wax it will melt (at about 130F).
