Britannia metal is often called pewter, but strictly speaking it is not. Referring to it as a pewter alloy is more correct. Standard pewter of years past almost always contained lead. Britannia contains no lead. Also, older or traditional types of pewter are inferior in strength, brightness, smoothness, and hardness when compared to britannia.
