It can be snapped down to become a medium size insert. You also get 1 Newborn Insert that is also 3 layers thick and is shorter, trimmer and hour glass shaped to reduce bulkiness for smaller babies when used alone. When your baby grows, snap it to the one-size insert. There are 3 different positions so you can put absorbency where it is needed most. Both are made of 80% polyester/20% polymide.
