Tiarella 'Sugar and Spice' Foamflower
This shade loving native perennial has jagged multi-lobed leaves that will give any Japanese maple a run for it's money. The outside of each leaf is a vivid green, while the inside is a spectrum of reds. The compact nature of this plant makes it great as a ground cover under taller trees and shrubs, it can be used anywhere you might consider hostas, ferns, or its cousin the coral bell. In the mid to late spring the tiarella adds to its appeal as panicles of white and pink flower rise up from the plant creating an intoxicating display of color and texture. Native to North America, Tiarella loves shade and moist conditions. They are native to the Appalachian mountain range and if you ever find yourself in Smokey Mountain National Park, keep your eyes open and you'll be rewarded with a sight of some of these beautiful and delicate native plants.
